Mislabeling in the Poultry Industry

11/30/2023

What do you imagine when you hear of an organic product? Whats unique about it that makes it organic?

How about natural, pasture-raised, cage-free, or humane?

For my social justice project, I decided to incorporate a visual, gift, and a bit of conversation into my activism. When making my visual, I didn't want to include a heavy amount of information, but rather to use the visual as a guide for my conversation as well as a conversation starter. Since I talked about this social justice topic at my workplace, most of the people who visited were comfortable with the idea of talking about activism or learning more about the environment and animals. With this, it was much easier to slide into the topic. The flyer consists of my activity starter: the meaning behind the labels. It has five words that I consider to be some of the most common and tricky labels currently in our market. With the flyer I taped on a plastic easter egg that contained a treat inside that was mislabeled. The treats consisted of chocolate kisses, mint patties, and other assortments of small candies. It was a good incentive to get families with younger kids into the topic. I would start by asking at the front desk if visitors would like a piece of candy and ask them about their meanings of the words. Regardless of their answer, they would get what was inside the egg! It was really exciting for me at least to see the vast number of responses. It was also a great opportunity to provide others with information, though in this case it's more the lack of information due to how uncontrolled the label industry is. Most visitors claimed that "natural" signified a product compeltely free of chemicals, though that isn't entirely true. From my research, chemicals were to be used in natural products on a significant number of occasions. One common theme amongst most of the visitors whom responded, was their lack of concrete definition behind the terms. Most of their definitions were vague in and open to interpretation using words such as: "healthy, fulfilling, and good." It was really exciting to be able to help them take that further step and try to solidify what a word actually means. I would ask them to pretend like they were raising a farm and they needed to make their poultry industry cage-free, what would that look like?
