What it really means to be a mixed kid, the exploration of the boundaries of the term multiracial
Artist Statement:
My project consists of the search for what it truly means to be a mixed kid. As I am a mixed kid myself I wanted to learn the limits of the word itself and what that means for me. The journey into who and who does not fit into the term multiracial and its boundaries and definitions. I also discuss the origins of the term, look into date regarding race in the U.S. and its projections over time and into the future, while also providing predictions for the future of multiracial populations. I also wanted to highlight some other terms such as the differences between multiracial and multiethnic, dive into deeper explanations of terms such as race and ethnicity, as well as older forms of the word multiracial. Touching on colonization aspects as well and how that plays a part in race definitions and expansions. As well as countries with larger sub racial groups that contain multiple ethnicities that make putting someone in one box of a definition, even more complicated. For my takeaway of my project, I hope people get more insight into what racial definitions are, the complexities of them, and start to question why and how society needs to put everyone in a box or label. As well as understanding that the idea of race is a more complicated question than we may think, and hope they explore more into this topic even after interacting with my project. I have done this through a narrated presentation, as well as a poem of my own experiences as a multiracial individual. For the question of what does it really mean to be a mixed kid, the answer is it is subjective, self-identifying, and limitless!

My poem of my own multiracial experience
Intertwined
Leaves fall from a vine
One vine that is in a state that is intertwined
Two chains become tangled
As history becomes mangled
Everything becomes one blend
No one knows where is the start nor where is the end
Society runs in circles looking for answers to the questions
While the cycle continues on regardless of definitions
Unknown where I belong in this term
All I know is that in both identities I stand firm.
